International students – Tax Identification Number (Codice Fiscale) in Italy

The Codice Fiscale is a unique 16-character alphanumeric code used to identify individuals in Italy, similar to a Social Security Number in other countries. It is essential for various activities, such as opening a bank account, enrolling in university, signing a lease, or purchasing property.

How to Apply for a Codice Fiscale

  • Abroad: Non-resident individuals can apply through the Italian consular authorities in their country of residence.

  • In Italy:

    • Non-EU Citizens: They can obtain the Codice Fiscale at the Single Desk for Immigration (Sportelli Unici per l’immigrazione) or any Police Headquarters (Questure). The Single Desk issues it to those applying for entry into Italy for employment or family reunification purposes. Police Headquarters assign it to foreign nationals requiring the issuance or renewal of a residence permit.
    • EU Citizens: They can apply at any office of the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) by presenting a valid identification document (identity card or passport).

Required Documentation

  • Non-EU Citizens:

    • A valid passport with visa (if required) or any other document accepted by Italian authorities.
    • A certificate of identity issued by the Italian diplomatic or consular authorities of the country of nationality (with photo).
    • A valid residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
    • An ID card issued by the municipality of residence in Italy.
    • Proof of the right to stay in Italy, even temporarily.
  • EU Citizens:

    • A valid identification document (identity card or passport).

In Case of Incorrect Data

If the Codice Fiscale card contains incorrect information, a replacement can be requested at any office of the Italian Revenue Agency by presenting a valid identification document.

In Case of Loss or Theft

A duplicate of the Codice Fiscale can be requested online or directly at a territorial office of the Italian Revenue Agency.
